Skincare Science: The No-Frills Base Protocol for Anti-Aging
Forget €500 creams. Dermatological science agrees on three fundamental pillars: Protection, Renewal, and Hydration.

Research & Analysis
The beauty industry sells dreams and expensive packaging. Dermatology sells molecules. If you want real, measurable results, you need to ignore marketing and look at active ingredients.
Here is the evidence-based skincare "Holy Trinity."
The Skin Barrier: Your First Defense
Before thinking about actives, you must think about the barrier. Healthy skin has a balanced microbiome and an intact hydrolipidic film. If your skin feels "tight," is red, or stings, the barrier is compromised. In this state, any anti-aging product will be irritating. Repair the barrier first with ceramides and hydration.
1. SPF: Sunscreen in the Morning
It's the number one anti-aging product, without rival. 90% of visible skin aging (wrinkles, spots, laxity) is not due to age, but to photo-damage (UV ray damage).
- The Science: UV rays destroy collagen and elastin. No repair cream can compensate for the damage if you don't block the cause.
- Action: SPF 30 or 50, every single morning, year-round.
2. Retinoids: Retinol and Tretinoin in the Evening
Vitamin A derivatives. They are the only class of topical ingredients with decades of clinical studies proving their ability to reverse (not just prevent) signs of aging.
- The Science: Retinoids accelerate cell turnover (which slows with age) and stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen.
- Action: Start with an over-the-counter Retinol at low concentration (0.2-0.5%) or ask your dermatologist for Tretinoin (prescription). Note: they irritate initially. Use them 2 times per week and increase slowly. Never during the day (they are photosensitizing).
3. Vitamin C: Ascorbic Acid in the Morning
A powerful antioxidant that enhances the effect of SPF.
- The Science: Neutralizes free radicals generated by UV and pollution. Brightens skin tone and reduces dark spots by inhibiting melanin production.
- Action: 10-15% L-Ascorbic Acid serum in the morning, before SPF.
Exfoliation: Chemical vs. Physical
Avoid gritty scrubs (physical) that create micro-tears. Prefer gentle chemical exfoliants like Salicylic Acid (BHA) for pores or Glycolic Acid (AHA) for brightness, to be used 1-2 times a week.
Lifestyle Factors
Skin reflects internal health. Sleep, hydration, and nutrition (sugar causes glycation and wrinkles) matter more than any cream. Smoking is enemy number two after the sun: it vasoconstricts capillaries, starving the skin of oxygen.
Consistency is everything: a simple routine done every day beats a complex routine done occasionally.
